Metropolitan Safe Deposits is an independent business founded on delivering maximum security. Opened last year on Chiswick High Road, its custom-built West London premises combines sophisticated multi-layered alarm and surveillance systems with tried and tested physical protection to create an affordable, convenient facility.
‘At a time when banks are exiting the safe custody market, we provide our customers with a proven alternative option,’ says Chief Executive, Christopher Barrow. At full capacity, the Chiswick vaults contain over 8000 safe deposit boxes in 12 sizes; the smallest, which is perfect for storing keepsakes, rings or watches, costs £95 p.a.
‘We know who, what, when and where at all times,’ explains Christopher. ‘The security network begins with 24/7 CCTV of the perimeter and interior (except for private viewing cubicles in the vaults) and that is also monitored by our offices in St John’s Wood and Knightsbridge. The vaults were pre-fabricated by the industry’s leading manufacturer, the building itself is equipped with seismic and stress detectors and the “secure area” beyond reception has bullet-resistant airlock doors with magnetic, mechanical and electronic locks.
‘We have three integrated alarm systems and client access is controlled by computer-verified ID and biometric fingerprint procedures. Each safe deposit box is individually alarmed – that’s a unique feature – and we are immediately alerted if more than a given number are open at one time.’
Christopher and his team have carefully followed – and gone beyond – recommended Covid-19 guidelines. ’We’ve invested substantially in works to make the premises compliant,’ he explains. ‘We’ve knocked down walls between offices and installed screens to ensure the safest environment, our staff have full PPE and they will see clients by appointment outside our currently restricted opening hours (Mon-Sat 10am-4pm) and, of course, we are applying strict social distancing rules.
‘To our knowledge, this type of vault has never been breached,’ adds Christopher. ‘If one system is cut off, a back-up is always in place. I’m pleased to say that demand is strong – perhaps that reflects a wider cautious mood – and we will continue to provide the highest quality service.’
