Hearing aid audiologist Deepak Jagota had only recently moved into his new clinic premises on the High Road when lockdown was declared. ‘I had settled in and was enjoying having much more space to see my patients, with a comfortable reception area and larger consulting/testing room. Of course, everything then came to a sudden stop.
‘In June my profession was designated an essential service and I was allowed to re-open the practice, but that required significant changes to ensure the necessary Covid-19 health and safety recommendations could be followed.
‘I now use an appointmentonly one-in-one-out entry system, I wear a medical gown, apron and gloves at all times, I have masks and sanitiser for patients and my equipment is rigorously disinfected. It’s about providing complete reassurance and I’ve had lovely feedback from my regulars, many of whom are elderly.’
Deepak offers a comprehensive range of audiology services, from conducting hearing tests and prescribing hearing aids to microsuction earwax removal and tinnitus advice. Personal care is at the heart of his approach. ‘I allocate as much time as is necessary to each patient. It’s not a conveyor belt. If, for example, someone is a little nervous and needs longer to chat, that’s a pleasure. Equally important, I have a thorough aftercare package and that includes a six-monthly “F1 pitstop” to check everything is working well.’
Deepak consistently invests in state-of-the-art testing equipment and, as an independent audiologist, he can choose the best solutions from all the leading manufacturers. ‘If a particular device doesn’t prove suitable, I can easily recommend an alternative. That flexibility also applies to the cost and cosmetic appearance of the hearing aid.’
In recent years, Deepak has volunteered regularly on audiology charity missions. In 2019, he returned to Armenia, where thousands of people have been successfully treated, for a third visit. ‘It’s a wonderful experience. I love what I do. Life is too short to put up with a hearing problem that reduces the joy of connecting with others.’
