‘I’ve lived near Ravenscourt Park for almost 25 years and it’s a space I hold very dear,’ smiles John Horton, founder of Horton and Garton estate agents. ‘It’s where my boys learned to play football and I’m lucky enough to walk through it almost every day; I always marvel at the variety of trees and how they change through the seasons. The Park is such a wonderful asset for us all.’

Ravenscourt Park’s 33 acres is home to over 600 documented trees: some old, some new; some rare, some exotic and some overlooked. Founded a decade ago, the Friends group has been at the forefront of efforts to protect the Park as a green lung for future generations. It has now devised an easy-to-follow Tree Trail to help identify and appreciate 25 of the most magnificent specimens, among them Tasmanian Cider Gums, a Yellow Buckeye from the Appalachian mountains, a Mexican Pine, a North American Red Oak, a huge Tree of Heaven from China, ancient limes and chestnuts and a 100-year-old avenue of wild cherry trees.

‘Horton and Garton has a well-deserved reputation for its community spirit, so we were delighted when John generously offered to sponsor the Tree Trail,’ said Annabelle May, Chair of the Friends. ‘We hope that it will prove to be a year-round resource for local schools as well as fun for families and other visitors to follow.’ The Trail starts from the Sir William Bull Memorial Gates on King Street (it goes past all the 10 entry points so you can start at any one) and photographs, descriptions and information about the origins, characteristics and use of each tree can be downloaded.

‘I have been helping people to move into the area since 1995 and, then as now, I’m regularly told that Ravenscourt Park is a major draw,’ adds John. ‘It’s vital that wecontinue to support the Friends group and the essential role that it plays in preserving this historic open space for the local community.’
