Peter Hughes, co-owner of the Hugo Ceramicas retail showroom on the High Road, has forged links with tile factories worldwide to ensure he stocks an extensive range of styles, sizes and materials (polished, stone, cement, concrete, marble, wood, porcelain) to suit all tastes and budgets.
‘Recently, we’ve seen an exceptional growth in sales, particularly in new 2cm thick outdoor tiles which come with matching 1cm thick indoor tiles,’ says Peter. ‘The “infinity” look, where the same tiles lead from inside out into the garden, has proved very popular. The 2cm tiles can be installed quickly using a pedestal system, which also allows electric and water systems to be run underneath, or fitted in the traditional way with adhesive. I’ve actually used them in my own home.’
While some of his competitors have struggled with no exports coming into the UK from Italy, Spain and China, the fact that Hugo Ceramicas maintains large stocks in its wholesale warehouse in Leeds (the wholesale arm of the business is called Intceram) has enabled Peter to maintain excellent supply lines to clients throughout the lockdown period.
