While on holiday in Japan in 2017, Marco and Nina Molone fell in love with Tokyo café culture and, in particular, its signature soufflé pancakes. Inspired, they came home to Chiswick intent on launching the UK’s first Japanese Pancake restaurant: there are now two branches, one in Victoria and the other on the High Road.
‘It was important to us to make the pancakes dairy and gluten-free, so I adapted the recipes in my kitchen,’ recalls Nina, who is a chef. Japanese soufflé pancakes have a fluffy texture and come with vegan and gluten-free toppings, such as syrup, fruit and whipped cream. They are served in stacks in sweet (Ultimate Crème Brûlée, Miso-kissed Caramel) or savoury options (Soufflé Royale with smoked salmon, Avocado and Poached Egg or Egg and Bacon Bliss).
While the pancakes are the house speciality, there’s so much more to the menu. ‘From early morning coffees with fresh Korean croissants, Sourdough toast and bagels through Brunch and Lunch to evening meals, we offer something deliciously different at all times,’ says Marco (the restaurant is open Monday-Thursday and Sunday until 9pm, Fridays until 10.30pm and Saturdays until 10pm).
Highly recommended are the gluten-free Wagyu Toro Toro Cheese Burger served with a savoury sauce, Umami Teriyaki Sando, a juicy pan-crisped chicken thigh lacquered in teriyaki glaze and the Miso Eggplant and Truffle rice.
‘Our friendly team will advise about the menu, we provide catering for events and we have a “secret” back room in the restaurant that is perfect for private and children’s parties,’ adds Nina. ‘We also offer the Embargo Loyalty Card (collect five pancake stamps and the sixth pancake is free) and do keep an eye on our website and Insta feed. Every few weeks we announce a special Wednesday 50% discount offer (between 3-9pm), but keep checking to find out which Wednesday it is!’
