Vaults that provide affordable maximum security for everyone
Founded over 40 years ago, Metropolitan Safe Deposits is one of the longest-established independent businesses in the safe custody sector. In summer 2019 Chief Executive Christopher Barrow and his team opened the company’s third London vault, and first new-build development, in Chiswick.
The investment required was substantial, but it left Metropolitan perfectly positioned to fill the vacuum left when major High Street banks abandoned the safe deposit box market en masse as part of wider cost-cutting measures. ‘We provide a tried and trusted alternative option,’ says Christopher. ‘A safe haven for valuable items, whether gold bars and coins, documents, art and antiques or USB sticks.
‘While we are still less accustomed in the UK to using what Americans call a Bank Box – they are very common there – I do think attitudes are changing. That’s been particularly evident in the encouraging demand for our service this year. We have seen an increased take-up of all our boxes: we offer 12 different sizes with the smallest costing £104 p.a. and the largest ranging from £880-£2010 p.a (all prices include £10,000 insurance).’
The world-class security system at the Chiswick vault combines proven physical protection with cutting-edge electronic technology. ‘Our vaults and boxes were supplied by Robur Safe, the industry-leading manufacturer,’ explains Christopher. ‘Client access is controlled by computer-verified ID and fingerprint processes; long gone are the days of being escorted around the premises. We also have 24/7 perimeter and interior CCTV (except for private cubicles in the vaults), bullet-resistant airlock doors, stress detectors and sophisticated multi-layered alarm and surveillance procedures.
‘Our philosophy is to make renting a box as affordable and convenient as possible. That’s why we focus on every aspect of our operation – infrastructure, technology and staff recruitment and training – with equal care. By so doing, we can offer clients the reassurance that their treasured possessions are in safe keeping.’
