In nearly four decades as co-owners of The Carpetstore, Clay and Joe Miller have always focused on adding new designs and styles to their portfolio of carpets, made-to-measure bespoke rugs, stair-runners and luxury vinyl tiles and laminate flooring. However, the latest products don’t necessarily eclipse the most enduringly popular lines: the Flatweave Classic Fine Herringbone range from Fibre is a case in point.
‘For the last eight or nine years it has stayed in our top three bestsellers,’ says Clay. ‘A 10% wool herringbone, the carpets are exceptionally hard-wearing and very easy to clean, and so perfect for all areas of the home. And now Fibre has expanded the range, bringing out 11 new colours with even finer, more defined patterns – we have them all and they look amazing.’
Equally in demand is Unnatural Flooring’s man-made alternative to sisal, which came onto the market in 2023. ‘If you spill tea, coffee or wine on natural sisal the stain can’t be removed,’ explains Clay. ‘Unnatural’s sisal-look is stain-resistant and has the same look and feel as sisal. Also, it can be made up into rugs for patios and decking and is ideal for offices and communal properties.’
Another sisal look-a-like, the Anywhere Ca-rPet range, was launched last autumn, and promptly went out of stock. That supply issue has now been rectified and the environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional yarn – the carpets are made from recycled plastic bottles – is again proving a hit with customers.
Clay and Joe can display 100 ranges in their large showroom and they have at least another 100 in stock in the basement. ‘So, if someone is looking for a more unusual carpet, we can usually bring up a pattern book to suit,’ says Clay. ‘If you are investing in flooring, we will have a solution for every budget and taste.’
