‘When the Anywhere Ca-rPet range was launched last Autumn, I knew immediately that it was going to be very popular,’ recalls Clay Miller, co-owner of the Carpetstore with his brother Joe. ‘It was the best sisal look-a-like product that I had ever seen – it was just about indistinguishable from the real thing.
‘Even better, the carpets have excellent green credentials as they are made entirely from recycled plastic bottles; also, they are hard-wearing and soft, so perfect for both heavy traffic areas and bedrooms, rugs and runners, and the price is competitive – and that’s not always the case with eco-friendly carpets.’
Clay’s initial instinct proved spot-on, but the level of demand for Ca-rPet in itself caused a problem. ‘It rapidly went out of stock,’ he explains. ‘Everyone was caught by surprise, including the manufacturer. That situation has been rectified – and there’s now plenty of stock available – and the carpets are proving more popular than ever.’
Ca-rPet is a sustainable, environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional yarn. The manufacturing process involves collecting, sorting, cleaning and melting plastic bottles to create fibres that are then spun into yarn; it takes 50 bottles to make one square metre of carpet.
‘Of course, the major drawback with putting down real sisal is that it can’t be cleaned,’ says Clay. ‘In contrast, Ca-rPet is stain-resistant and moth-proof and it comes in four designs and is sized at four or five metres wide. That means there’s no need for joins, which is fantastic.’
The Carpetstore uses its own experienced fitters on every job and they will also take up old carpets, trim doors on-site and lay plyboard and hardboard.
