When Paul and Seda Durham took over the “Tudor-style” pub on Sutton Lane North last year, they brought back its former name, The Hole in the Wall – it had been The Smokehouse and The Queens Head in recent incarnations.
‘Many people still affectionately referred to The Hole in the Wall, so it was a simple decision,’ recalls Paul. ‘We also commissioned a new sign and that’s now back in place.’ The couple are not new to the trade or to Chiswick: previously, they ran a successful pub in Southgate and, 20 years ago, Paul managed The Paragon (now The Piano Bar) on the High Road.
‘It’s been very nice to return to the area,’ he says. ‘Seda and I loved The Hole in the Wall on our first viewing. We want to bring the pub back to life – sadly, it had been closed for quite a while – and make it a proper family and dog-friendly neighbourhood local.
‘We’re fortunate to have Jalal Sadqi, who was formerly a Head Chef at the Houses of Parliament, in charge of the kitchen. He serves light bites, hearty home-made dishes and superb Sunday lunches, and he has devised a tempting Christmas menu (see website: two courses for £39, three courses for £45). That will be available from 10 November and we are now taking reservations.’
Future plans include Quiz Nights on Tuesdays and live music events and, with a Snug, bar area, spacious dining room and beautiful garden for warmer days, The Hole in the Wall is the perfect venue for private parties, corporate events and weddings – there is sitting space indoors for 100 and for 70 outdoors.
‘Also, if any Clubs or Societies are looking for a home, we would be delighted to help,’ adds Paul. ‘Whether you’re stopping for a quiet pint, catching up with friends over lunch or marking a special occasion, you’ll find a warm welcome.’
