Sevda Uykan
Personal one-off Art-Box gifts for friends and family
‘A few years ago, I was relaxing at home and wanted to do some painting,’ recalls Sevda Uykan. ‘However, I couldn’t find a spare canvas and I don’t like working on paper. Then I remembered I had an old wooden chopping board in the kitchen and thought that might be an interesting material to use. I was really pleased with the result – and that’s how the idea for my Art-Boxes was born.’
A successful artist known for her bold, vividly coloured artworks and a signature style that combines acrylics and oils with pieces of embroidery, Sevda won the virtual competition organised by the Saatchi Gallery during lockdown (Saatchi Takeover). Since then she has taken part in the Brick Lane Gallery’s Contemporary Art Exhibition and been invited to join an exhibition curated by Anthony Fawcett at the Boomer Gallery, and also written and illustrated two children’s books, Mila’s Rainbow and Londi on Mars (both available on Amazon).
Following that first ‘chopping board’ experiment, Sevda began painting on wooden boxes, initially giving them to friends as presents and then, as word-of-mouth requests grew, creating them to order. ‘People send me photos of their chosen subject matter – family members, loved ones and pets are favourites – and I produce a unique mini-artwork. The boxes are perfect for keepsakes, jewellery and watches and, recently, I’ve begun using marble tiles, which make fantastic coasters.
‘For me, the Art-Boxes are a lovely complement to my usual painting.’ Sevda’s work can be viewed on her website/Social Media and she is happy to accept commissions.
