The smallest details often give the most revealing insight into the core philosophy of a business. Aristone Optical on North End Road has looked after the eyes of many generations of Fulham families, and it is a perfect case in point.
With every new pair of glasses, owner Ritesh provides a complimentary case. Nothing too unusual in that. However, rather than the usual blank cleaning cloth inside, the case comes with a stylish branded cloth. The story of how this “extra touch” happened exemplifies the Aristone team’s emphasis on building a relationship with their customers and friendly personal service.
‘Our cloth was designed by a local resident called Tony Escott,’ explains Ritesh. ‘He has macular degeneration and we’ve been looking after him for six years. In that time, we’ve talked and got to know each other really well. I discovered that Tony had been a professional artist all his life, and that when he started to lose his vision he had adapted and learned to draw on a large iPad.

‘At that time our cleaning cloth was just the standard black square. So, when Tony offered to create a bespoke alternative, I was delighted. The result is wonderfully vibrant and always a talking point. For me, it was fascinating to learn how Tony sees the world and copes with his condition. He has also produced a tote bag and designs our annual Christmas cards. I just have to persuade him to sign his work – he’s always modestly reluctant.’
This Autumn will see the arrival of exciting collections from leading industry names such as Tom Ford, Prada and Ray-Ban and Ritesh has also designed new frames for Aristone’s own highly successful signature ao brand.
