The Sulgrave Youth Club: Calling All Ex-Sulgrave Members…

Nick Sazeides

Did you, a relative or friend attend the Sulgrave Youth Club? If so, you can contribute to its centenary celebrations

In 2026 the Sulgrave Youth Club on Goldhawk Road will be celebrating its centenary. To mark that significant anniversary, Manager Nick Sazeides is asking past members to get in touch with their personal memories of the Club.

‘We want people to dig through old photograph albums and diaries,’ explains Nick. ‘Every single contribution however small is important and the results will form part of an exhibition at the Club and an oral history project that is being collated by photo-journalist, Cinzia D’Ambrosi. She will be interviewing former members and the material will be archived for future generations.’

Nick’s appeal has produced a good response – the oldest people to have made contact were regulars in the1960s – and he is sure that more still live locally. Without doubt, the most famous alumni are Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend of The Who. ‘Roger played in The Sulgrave Rebels group and Pete has already kindly written to me with his recollections of attending a residential course. We’re hoping they might attend our launch event on 26 June next year!’

The Club is open Monday-Saturday and hosts 200-250 children aged seven to 19 each week. ‘There’s no charge,’ says Nick. ‘‘Of course, funding is a struggle: we hire out the premises and The Sulgrave Foundation which owns our building gives an annual grant, but mostly we secure money by applying to Trusts and charities.

‘Most of the kids have little access to good facilities outside the Club or school. We provide sports, arts and music activities as well Maths, English and Science clubs and holiday outings. Most importantly, this is a safe place for them to be, somewhere they can express themselves and learn while having fun.’

Nick is currently arranging reunions for ex-members, with the first on 22 October (contact him for details). Send your memories of the Club to: centenary@thesulgraveclub.org.uk
