Q&A with Blerina, owner of BB’s Beauty & Massage Therapy
What does BB’s Beauty & Massage Therapy offer?
Health, beauty and massage therapies – in our treatment room, your home or work space. My job is to help women feel confident and comfortable in themselves. Whether it’s through rejuvenating facials or relaxing massages, helping women take pride in caring for themselves, whether that is an aesthetic benefit or an emotional one – is something I’m really passionate about.
When and why did you start BB’s Beauty & Massage Therapy?
Covid is the reason why my business exists today. Previously I was working in a luxury spa that unfortunately had to close during the first lockdown. It made me think uniquely about my skillset and how I could turn that into an opportunity to deliver an elevated, professional service in a personalized and intimate environment.
What are your unique selling points (USPs)?
- I deliver an elevated, professional service in a personalized and intimate environment.
- Years of experience from working in the most highly respected beauty bars and medispas in West London.
- Enthusiasm about beauty, skincare, health and wellbeing – I am a treatment aficionado.
- I combine detail-orientated techniques with quality customer service, drawing upon my level 4 Beauty Therapist qualifications from VTCT as well as certification from the award-winning skincare brand Dermalogica.
What challenges have you overcome?
Right now every day presents a new challenge, especially as the covid-19 pandemic continues to restrict normal ways of interacting. It’s also challenging, as any single working parent can relate, making time for my family and myself.
What is the most valuable advice you have received?
Here are two pieces of advice I’ve received that have been game changers for me. The first is the constant investment in my education. Without it, I wouldn’t be able to keep up not only with the trends in the beauty industry, but also the technical application of innovations in new technology. I have to continually invest in my self and my skills to be able to compete in a market that is always moving forward.
The second is related, but not being complacent and breaking out of the comfort zone. If I were to get stuck in a routine, I wouldn’t be trying to adapt and grow my offering. It’s up to me to continually push myself. No one else is going to do it for me, and if I don’t do it for me I will never grow.
What advice can you share with aspiring startups?
The first is to make sure you’re having fun. If you’re enjoying “the hustle” it’s going to feel like a chore and you’ll begin to resent the pursuit. The second is to surround yourself with inspiring people whose points-of-view you respect. Talk about your ideas, ask for feedback, and test new concepts.
Why should we support local businesses and traders?
Supporting local businesses is what helps the community thrive. There is the obvious economic impact that supporting local helps maintain a vibrant high street and what makes W4 a desirable post code. But also it’s the people you meet and the relationships you build and that ‘network’ makes your local community more resilient to pressures like Covid-19 has put on us all.
