Join the Home Instead friendly team at a free monthly tea party
‘Older people often say to us: “I’ve lived in this area for many years, but now my friends have all moved away. I don’t know anyone or have anywhere to go.” That’s just heart-breaking to hear – and it’s why we wanted to do something to help alleviate that sense of isolation.’
Maddy Alemayehu, the Director of Home Instead Chiswick and Hammersmith, is talking about the Community Hub Afternoon Tea, an initiative that began in March. ‘We will be hosting tea parties (2.30-4.30pm) on the last Wednesday of the month at the Catholic Centre on Dukes Avenue,’ she explains.
‘In fact, we used to hold them before the pandemic and they were very successful. Post-lockdown, we’ve had messages asking if we would be starting again. Most importantly, anyone can come – you don’t have to be a Home Instead client – and they are free.
‘We serve tea, coffee, cakes and sandwiches and we want to create a friendly atmosphere in which everyone can meet, chat and enjoy entertainment and guest speakers. It’s about being able to look forward to a date in the diary.’
Home Instead has been working in West London for 10 years, providing practical and personal assistance – including Home Help and Companionship, Dementia, Respite and 24/7 Live-in Care – that enables its clients to enjoy independent lives in their homes.
Maddy and her colleagues will be at the parties to meet and greet and carers and family members are welcome to attend. ‘There’s no need to book in advance, and no pressure to join in,’ she says. ‘The Catholic Centre has parking, easy access and disabled facilities. Social isolation can profoundly affect mental wellbeing and we’re passionate about taking positive action to make life a little more fulfilling.’
