Over the last four years James Fitzgerald, the tenant of Flynn’s Pub & Townhouse, has been masterminding a complete overhaul of the business. ‘We’re a friendly team and we’ve worked hard to create a welcoming atmosphere,’ explains James, a psychologist who practised in Ireland and Canada before switching to the hospitality industry.
Nothing reflects the impressive recent re-invention of Flynn’s – a coaching inn was first recorded on the site in 1710 – more than its accommodation. ‘Many people don’t know about our boutique-style rooms,’ explains James. ‘We have 11 in all; there are two suites with super king-size beds and a living roomarea, and the others are doubles or twins, depending on what best suits the guest.’
Current online ratings certainly suggest James and his colleagues have a winning formula. ‘I’m pleased to say that we’ve got a 4.5 out of 5 rating on TripAdvisor, 9.5 out of 10 on booking.com and a 100% recommendation on Expedia,’ he says. ‘We’re proud of that feedback and determined to maintain our high standards. It’s one reason why we repaint the rooms every six months.’
Judging from customer comments, guests also relish Flynn’s generous breakfasts – as James confirms, ‘no one goes away hungry’ – which are available from 7am.
