Healthy Eating Workshop: Home Instead – Nurturing The Body And Mind

As the body and mind age, good nutrition and a balanced diet can improve the mental and physical quality of life. Research has shown that eating well plays a key role in minimising health issues, managing chronic illnesses and boosting cognitive ability and the immune system.

However, when Home Instead commissioned a pre-Covid survey of the eating habits of over 75 year-olds, the results revealed that a significant number didn’t cook, perhaps due to frailty or disability, and relied on microwave meals and takeaways. ‘Of course, the effects of the pandemic will have exacerbated that situation,’ says Kris Dulnik AfN, a Registered Associate Nutritionist and the Trainer/Engagement Officer at Home Instead.

‘That’s why we have now launched our “Stay Nourished” campaign. Over the summer, we will be hosting free practical workshops-cum-activity sessions focusing on the three pillars of health in later life: Healthy Eating, a Healthy Body and Mind, and Mobility. The meetings will be held in Chiswick, Hammersmith and Fulham and everyone is welcome to attend, including
families, friends and carers.’

The Healthy Eating workshop covers nutrition and includes practical tips on shopping, budgeting, label reading, food and dementia and recipe preparation, including how to adapt favourite meals; Healthy Body and Mind looks at how mindfulness and relaxation exercises can combat feelings of anxiety and stress in everyday life; and Mobility demonstrates chair-based exercises for the main joints and muscle groups that will maintain flexibility.

‘There is no obligation to take part, you can come and listen, share personal experiences and learn about the issues,’ says Kris. ‘The first two workshops on Healthy Eating and Healthy Body and Mind will be held at Grove Neighbourhood Centre, Brackenbury Village on
20 July and 25 July respectively (2-4pm). To reserve a space or for information, call me on 020 8746 1213 or email kris@hc.homeinstead.co.uk. I look forward to meeting you.’
