W6 Garden Centre’s knowledgeable and passionate team will help you find the perfect plants to give any outdoor space a seasonal boost

If you have popped into or even just passed the entrance to W6 Garden Centre during the recent spell of hot weather, then you’ve probably noticed a meticulously organised watering operation in full swing. ‘That’s one key reason why our plants are looking fantastic,’ says the Manager, Louise Alhadeff. ‘There’s no secret to it!

‘At this time of year, consistent watering is one of the most important jobs, and we take it seriously. Having invested in the best quality plants, it’s then our responsibility to keep them in beautiful condition. Doing that efficiently means focusing carefully on each plant, only watering the soil and, with displays, making sure that even the smallest pots tucked away at the back are never missed.

‘When watering at home, there are some practical tips that will help ensure your garden flourishes over the summer. Mornings or evenings are best, try to avoid splashing flowers and foliage because that can cause scorching, use premium compost and never leave a plant in the pot in which it was bought – always pot up one size so there’s more soil to take on and retain moisture.’

For all UK garden centres, this year has been a particularly tough one thanks to severe shortages. ‘Over the winter, suppliers didn’t grow as much because of the high cost of heating,’ explains Louise. ‘Fortunately for us, we’ve been able to call on our long-standing contacts in the trade to secure plants the instant that they become available, even if that means placing an order at midnight!

‘So, if your garden needs a colourful summer refresh, there’s a wonderful choice. For example, our white hydrangeas look spectacular and we have a striking array of salvias – they are drought-resistant, come in cool blues, purples and whites and stand out in a pot or sunny border – as well as the vibrant hot reds, oranges and yellows of dahlias and crocosmias that give an exciting lift to every space. And if you would like advice, just ask me or one of our outdoor plant experts, Neil and Maxine: we’re always happy to answer questions.’

Similarly, the Garden Centre’s popular Green Room houseplant oasis has a summery feel with a superb selection of stock, from the exotic and rare to traditional favourites. ‘It’s always so lush inside, it’s like visiting a tropical country,’ says Louise. ‘Personally, I love the spectacular foliage plants, such as the Calatheas which come from South America.’

In recent months, the W6 team has transformed what was the Christmas Winter Cabin into a spacious new Lifestyle Shop. With elegant Alexander Rose outdoor furniture, vases, pots, candles and a wide range of stylish accessories with Mediterranean, rustic and green themes, it has already proved popular with customers. And, of course, if you want a break, W6’s award-winning café is the perfect place to enjoy a delicious snack, cake and coffee either indoors or on the sunny outside terrace.

‘I’m lucky to work with such an excellent, close-knit team,’ says Louise. ‘The way our plants look reflects the passion with which we always care for them. Equally, when it comes to customer service, nothing is too much trouble. We try to give everyone who comes to W6 the best possible experience.’
