Still thriving after 112 years serving the community, Alexander Barbers is a Hammersmith institution
‘The fact that Alan, Nad and I have worked here for a long time says everything about just how much we enjoy it,’ smiles Ewelina, one of the team at Alexander Barbers on Hammersmith Broadway. Collectively, the trio of stylists has clocked up almost 25 years. ‘It’s like joining a lovely big family. Our regulars become friends and, of course, we’re part of a business with such an amazing local heritage.’
To say that Alexander’s is a W6 institution is a major understatement: remarkably, the barbershop is now 112 years old. Founded in 1911, it remained in the same location until 2013, when the premises were needed for the construction of the new Metropolitan line entrance. However, after a brief spell around the corner in Shepherds Bush Road, the shop has been back on the Broadway since 2015.
Since the mid-1960s, Alexander’s has been owned by the Pavlou family (Nicos Pavlou is still closely involved behind the scenes) and it is now managed by Stavros (Stav) Christoudolakis. ‘We have the technical skills to provide high quality barbering for all types of hair and we offer every style of cut from classic to contemporary and skin fades as well hot towel shaves and beard trims,’ says Alan.
‘Many customers have been coming to us since they were young and now they bring in their own children,’ adds Nad. ‘We always take the time to make them feel relaxed and at home: there are toys for them to play with and we’ve even been known to hand over our phones so that they can watch videos!’
The barbershop is open seven days a week with late-night opening until 8pm on Mondays and Thursdays. ‘Whether it’s for a cut or shave, we deliver first-class results with a personal touch and at excellent value for money,’ says Ewelina. ‘We will make you look good, feel happy and you’ll enjoy the experience!’
