‘We have small boxes (from £104 p.a) for jewellery, keepsakes, watches and crypto private keys; medium-sized boxes (from £380 p.a) that can accommodate family heirlooms, legal papers, laptops, hard drives and gold bars; and large boxes (from £880 p.a) for a lifetime’s collection of antiques, coins or stamps. Every box comes with £10,000 of insurance and there are no extra access charges.
‘World-class security is the obvious reason for using a box, but underlying that is a less tangible benefit: peace of mind. The public demand for safe storage is clearly strong, and that makes the decision of major UK banks to abandon the sector rather curious. The reality is that they always regarded their High Street safe deposit box operations as an “add-on”, so dispensing with them has been an easy, immediate cost-cutting strategy in the current climate.’
Founded over 40 years ago and with long-established independent vaults in St John’s Wood and Knightsbridge, Metropolitan Safe Deposits has been perfectly placed to step into the vacuum. Designed and built by an industry-leading manufacturer, the Chiswick vault opened in 2019. It combines proven physical protection with sophisticated multi-layered alarm systems and computer-verified ID and fingerprint technology. In addition, all boxes are individually alarmed – that is a unique feature – and only a given number can be open at any one time.
