‘For us, this is the most exciting time of year,’ smiles Louise Alhadeff, Manager of W6 Garden Centre. ‘The Spring stock has arrived and our displays are looking amazing, with gorgeous plants bursting into flower and new leaf. Whether you want to design a garden from scratch, refresh a tired space or brighten up a balcony or patio, we have a riot of colour and choice.’
Both W6 and its companion business, the N1 Garden Centre, were founded by Beryl Henderson. Her vision was to create a new kind of life-enhancing urban garden centre, somewhere selling high quality plants and stylish accessories and with friendly, very knowledgeable staff.
‘Beryl’s philosophy is still at the core of what we do,’ says Louise. ‘Choosing plants can be daunting, particularly for inexperienced gardeners. We have everything from small perennials to large climbers (there’s a two-year guarantee on all outdoor plants) and one of us is always on hand to give practical assistance and ensure customers make the best selection for their budget.’ W6 offers a £5 local delivery service and the drivers will carry anything heavy straight through to the garden.
Louise and her staff work hand-in-hand with W6’s Urban Gardens team, which is led by Diogo Ferreira. ‘With our experience and expertise, we can make and rejuvenate gardens, roof terraces and balconies of all shapes and sizes,’ he says. ‘Most importantly, you can be certain that the plants we choose will complement one another and thrive in the light and soil conditions.
‘When we visit clients, we listen carefully to what they want. For example, how will the garden be used? As a tranquil space in which to relax or somewhere to entertain friends? Do they want to attract wildlife or have a children’s play area? Then, we devise mood boards and a detailed planting plan – we use the same premium plants as the Garden Centre – and a free quotation according to budget.
‘Also, we love people to come for a coffee at W6’s award-winning café and look at the plants – that makes the process collaborative and enjoyable. Equally, when we’re on-site we always take the time to explain how to care for each specimen; if the client feels involved, they will enjoy the garden that much more. And, for those tricky practical and maintenance tasks such as putting up wire lines or delicate pruning, we’re always available to help.’
