The window displays of some new businesses make an immediate “stop and look” impact. Rugs of Fulham on Munster Road is one such. Opened last November, the shop specialises in the sale, design and repair of beautiful Afghan, Persian and Indian rugs and kilims.
Owner Masoud Yarash and Manager Louise Edwards, have a combined 35 years’ experience in the trade in the UK. For Masoud, it is very much a family affair: four generations have been involved in the export of rugs from the region around Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan.
‘So many people there are involved in the production process,’ he explains. ‘We only use natural fibres, mainly wool. The yarn is spun by hand and vegetable dyed with the famous madder root, pomegranate, walnut shell, berries, seeds and flowers to create the colours. It is then dried in the sun, ready for distribution to the weavers. We have around 1000 artisans and the finished rugs are collected a few months later and then washed, finished and exported worldwide.’
Rugs of Fulham offers a remarkable choice of traditional and contemporary designs for every room in the home and Masoud also creates bespoke rugs for customers according to their preferred size, colour and pattern.
‘For all clients, we’re happy to arrange a no-obligation Home Trial,’ says Louise. ‘We take rugs to their home – it really helps our customers with their final choice, seeing their selection of different rugs in situ with their own furnishings.’
‘We also work with interior designers, supply hotels and offices, hire out for PR events and, if you have a damaged or soiled rug, our restorer can transform it using traditional repair and cleaning techniques. A handmade rug makes the perfect centre piece or finishing touch to a room: we would be delighted to show you around the shop and answer any questions.’
