Even after 30 years-plus in the trade, Clay and Joe Miller of the Carpetstore can never quite predict which range will suddenly take off in popularity. ‘Word of mouth recommendation, and in particular actually seeing a carpet in place, makes such a difference,’ says Clay.
‘For example, we’ve just taken delivery of new colourways in a very smart 10% wool Herringbone carpet from Fibre – it is exceptionally hard-wearing, so perfect for heavy-use areas. We put one down for a customer, her neighbour noticed it and then came into the showroom the next day to make an order.’
Clay and Joe deal with 90% of industry manufacturers. Hence, they are able to offer and constantly refresh the widest selection of classic and contemporary carpets, made-to-measure rugs and stair runners. Often the Carpetstore is the sole West London stockist for a product.
Over the last 18 months one range – Unnatural Flooring’s man-made alternative to sisal – has been a bestseller. ‘It looks and feels like sisal, comes in bold designs and is totally washable – stains can’t be removed from natural sisal,’ explains Clay. ‘People see the carpets in the homes of friends and family and love them: in fact, when we replaced our showroom flooring after a ceiling leak, we chose New England Woodstock from Unnatural.’
The Carpetstore uses its own experienced fitters on all jobs and that’s essential when working with “tricky” materials such as man-made sisal. ‘It takes real skill and patience to lay it as every contour is revealed,’ says Clay. ‘Also, our teams will take up old carpets, trim doors on-site and lay plyboard and hardboard.’
