‘The first thing to emphasise about EMS (Electro-Muscular Stimulation) training is that it absolutely does not involve giving electric shocks,’ smiles Tekla Szocs. ‘While it has long been popular on the Continent, EMS is new to the UK and, quite naturally, some people might be a little wary of the “electro” element.’

A specialist running and resistance coach, Tekla is fully qualified to use EMS technology. She introduced the exciting full-body discipline to her Chiswick studio in January: ‘When you take exercise, the brain automatically sends signals to the muscle fibres, prompting them to contract,’ she explains.

‘An EMS device mimics those signals. It delivers electrical impulses every four seconds, so increasing the frequency of contractions and making the work-out four to five times more intense and effective. Most importantly, the impulses are not “shocking” in any way; you never reach a point where muscles are cramping – there’s no pain at all.’

The impulses are transmitted via a wetsuit-like body vest (with leg and arm attachments) which the client wears during a tailored one-to-one session. Those sessions last a maximum 20 minutes and one per week is enough to see positive results. All muscle groups are activated – much more so than during conventional training – and the movements are low impact, with no stress on joints and ligaments and no need for vigorous squats or daunting weights, so lessening the risk of injury.
