The Pure Smiles dental practice has two premises: one in Fulham Road dedicated to hygiene and the other, a 10-minute walk away in New Kings Road, for dental treatments. ‘We rather like having a separate hygiene mclinic,’ says Dr Shiraz Akram, who co-owns Pure Smilesmwith his brother Ayzaaz. ‘It reflects the emphasis we place on oral health as part of our comprehensive care programme.’
Ayzaaz and Shiraz joined forces at Fulham Road in 2009 but, having outgrown the space, opened the New Kings Road site in 2016. ‘Initially, dentistry happened in both locations, but pandemic regulations made it sensible for us to divide the practice, and that’s how it has stayed,’
explains Ayzaaz.
‘The importance of regular hygiene appointments cannot be over-stated. The mouth is a gateway for bacteria to enter the body and research has proved that systemic issues, such as cardio-vascular disease, diabetes and dementia, are linked to poor oral hygiene. Equally, we know that if the gums are free from chronic inflammation and infection, then general health is better.
Kim and Holly
‘Holly and Kim, together with receptionist Denise, are based at Fulham Road. Both are experienced hygienists and they carry out treatments like teeth whitening and air polish stain removal, demonstrate effective brushing and flossing techniques and alert us to any problems. Also, they have a wonderful way of putting people at ease, and in particular children, and so play a key stepping stone role in encouraging nervous patients to see us.’
