‘When it comes to diagnosing and resolving faults, experience is our best asset. There are very few issues that we haven’t tackled before,’ adds Steve. ‘Cleaning up liquid spillages of all kinds, dying batteries, smashed screens, replacing hard drives, you name it… Once, we opened a laptop and it was full of fried insects and dead lava!’

Steve also offers domestic users a remote preventative maintenance package. ‘Failing to install updates on programs such as Windows, Dropbox, Flash, Java and Adobe – inevitably, people don’t get round to it – means risking being vulnerable to viruses and hacks. One of our clients lost £200,000 and he had no idea that it had happened! We will provide regular software updates, 50GB of online back-up and anti-virus protection.’

Steve himself is still hands-on, delivering comprehensive IT support for office and home-based businesses. ‘No two clients are the same and that’s why I like to develop a relationship with each one,’ he says. ‘By understanding how they operate, I can tailor what we do to their requirements.’

A popular part of the Chiswick Computers corporate service is Remote Monitoring and Management. ‘For a fixed monthly fee, we install sophisticated software that oversees a business computer system, carrying out updates and detecting failures as and when they happen,’ explains Steve. ‘It’s a preventative alternative to the traditional break/fix scenario.

‘Customers ask me if they need to make an appointment and I always say, “we’re a shop, just turn up.” If we can fix something on the spot we’ll do so and we’re happy to give advice. Also, we have a no-fix, no-fee guarantee and we explain everything in plain English!’
