With new headlines every day about unprecedented rises in utility bills over the winter, it’s more essential than ever that our heating systems are operating with maximum efficiency, both in keeping homes cosy and being as economic to run as possible.
So, it’s fascinating to hear which solution Samuele Alberton, aka The Italian Plumber, has chosen for his own family house. ‘I already had a Nest smart thermostat, which functioned well,’ he explains. ‘However, I was still heating the whole house simply to warm one or two rooms. So, after researching the many options on the market, I went for a Honeywell Evohome kit. ‘It works by using smart, connected controllers which are attached to individual radiator valves, and that allows the homeowner to create zoned heating areas within their existing system.
The installation only took a few hours and it’s very easy to use.
’I’ve been delighted with the results. We’re now able to control the exact temperature of each room independently using a remote controller or a smartphone app and, best of all, we consume less energy and save money – I estimate up to 30% on my bill. Also, we immediately noticed a more uniform level of comfort through the day – for example, staying warm downstairs while still opening the bedroom windows for ventilation – and we don’t get that “oven effect” when all the radiators switch on simultaneously.
‘Of course, there are other tricks of the trade that will help deliver the most heat for less cost. For example, make sure you adjust timer settings to suit changes in your daily routine and, most importantly, consider reducing the boiler temperature setting by one degree. You could reduce your heating bill by 10% without noticing any less warmth!
