Many people would love to make a dramatic career change, but very few do so. Oscar Marsland-Roberts is one of the rare exceptions. ‘I was working in the City, stuck in an office, and I realised that I wanted to be outside and doing something completely different.’
Oscar swapped the financial world for a work experience position with a gardening company. Subsequently, he joined full-time and then spent five years learning all aspects of the business: in 2017, he founded MR Landscapes and now his expert team provides a ‘one-stop shop’ of landscaping, bespoke planting and garden maintenance services.
‘My initial focus was on hard landscaping,’ recalls Oscar. ‘That encompassed any garden construction job, such as paving, fencing, building pergolas, laying down lawns, pathways, irrigation and decking. Increasingly, however, we were asked to create or refresh planting designs and take care of regular maintenance, so it was a natural evolution to add those elements to our portfolio.
‘We specialise in London front and back gardens – we have completed many successful projects in Chiswick – and work closely with the client through every stage of the process. When building a garden from scratch, we carry out a full site survey, provide detailed drawings and 3D modelling – I do the designs myself – and refine the concept until everyone is 100% happy.
