‘The Pure Smiles team make visiting the dentist a pleasure! They are skilled, sympathetic and provide proper customer service.’ – Gerry Wakelin
Dr Shiraz and Dr Ayzaaz Akram first worked together at the Pure Smiles dental practice in Fulham Road in May 2009. Having outgrown that site, which is now their dedicated Hygiene Centre, the brothers opened a second premises on the New Kings Road devoted solely to dentistry in 2016.
‘Those 15 years have flown by,’ reflects Ayzaaz. ‘It’s been lovely to become part of the local community and, in particular, to build relationships and become friends with generations of so many local families. That’s why we’ve decided to celebrate our anniversary in SW6 by organising a series of special offers over the course of the year – for example raffles for hampers and meals at restaurants – to thank our patients for their loyalty.’
Plans for the first raffle are already in place and it has been inspired by perhaps the most popular staff member. ‘Kiki, our Therapy Dog, is an important part of the team, so it seemed obvious to raise funds for Therapy Dogs Nationwide,’ smiles Shiraz. ‘And the prize will be the chance to take her out for a walk.’
‘We will also be supporting other charities, such as Care for Calais, Smile Train, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and Crisis, that mean a lot to us,’ adds Ayzaaz. Later this year he himself will be heading to Calais on his fifth trip to deliver supplies and provide emergency dental services to refugees. ‘It has been a life-changing experience. I first went in my Mondeo and worked in a car park. Since then, we’ve graduated to a transit van which, in comparison, is like a mobile surgery.’
At Pure Smiles Ayzaaz and Shiraz provide a comprehensive dental care programme, and one which is driven by a commitment to high-precision digital technology. This allows them flexibility when planning procedures from smile design makeovers to teeth straightening and achieves results that, with the correct hygiene plan, will last for years to come.
‘Of course, we don’t always take the high-tech approach,’ says Shiraz. ‘We have many older patients who pre-dated us at the practice, and we’re delighted that they have stayed. We fully appreciate that, for them, it’s better to focus on age-appropriate, functional oral health. We do offer sophisticated cosmetic treatments – Ayzaaz has just finished a Smile re-design for a lady in her 70s – but we leave it entirely up to the individual.’
Gerry Wakelin is one of Pure Smiles most long-standing patients. ‘I joined the practice in 1964,’ he recalls. ‘I’ve been on Ayzaaz’s list since he and Shiraz took over and the quality of his work has been superb.
‘Friends in their 80s have told me that their dentists have proposed having implants, but I’m perfectly happy that Ayzaaz prioritises looking after my teeth as they are. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming: I never feel that I’m on a conveyor belt and being hurried in and out – I would hate to change to another dentist.’
Whether it is a routine check-up, complex surgery or just dressing up as Superheroes to entertain and relax children, one fundamental concept underpins the Pure Smiles philosophy. Everything is done to deliver the very best outcome and an excellent personal experience for patients of every age.
