One of West London’s most skilled barbers is now working weekends at Alexander Barbers
‘Coming back to Alexander’s has been like returning to my old family – I feel rejuvenated,’ says Abedin Bajraktari, who is known to one and all as Dino. Something of a local legend in West London barbering, he is now working Saturdays and Sundays at the Hammersmith Broadway shop (next to the Hammersmith & City line entrance), much to the delight of his many regulars.
Alexander Barbers is a W6 institution. Founded in 1911, it has been owned by the Pavlou family since the mid-1960s (Nicos Pavlou is still closely involved behind the scenes) and is now managed by Stavros (Stav) Christoudolakis. Dino first joined the team in 1998 and stayed for 20 happy years, building close friendships with generations of local families.
‘When I arrived in the UK from Kosovo I found that my mechanical engineering qualifications weren’t recognised here,’ he recalls. ‘Growing up, I had spent time at my aunt’s salon and learned the basics and I enjoyed the “art” of cutting hair. So, I decided to enrol at the Taurus Hairdressing Academy and then gained experience at barbershops around London.’
Dino’s return to Alexanders has been prompted by his customers. ‘People were asking where they could see me. It was very flattering, butI didn’t want to work full-time. So, I called Nic and he kindly said I could just come in on a Saturday. That became all day Saturday and now Sunday too.
‘My colleagues are so friendly and super-talented. We have the technical skills to provide high quality barbering for all types of hair and we offer every style of cut as well hot towel shaves and beard trims. It’s so rewarding to make people look good and feel happy – and fantastic to be doing what I love.’
Alexander Barbers is open seven days a week with late-night opening until 8pm on Mondays and Thursdays.
