Buying a new carpet is a significant investment, and coming to a final decision not always easy. ‘We appreciate that,’ smiles Clay Miller, co-owner of the Carpetstore with his brother, Joe. ‘You can’t buy online, you need to feel the texture. Even when customers take home swatches, it’s often still tricky to visualise the effect over a large area of floorspace.’
So, when it came to showcasing one of their most popular lines, Clay and Joe have come up with the perfect solution. They have fitted a new carpet from Unnatural Flooring (New England Melrose) in their own showroom. ‘It’s a favourite of mine,’ says Clay. ‘A man-made alternative to sisal, it looks and feels just like sisal, comes in bold designs and is totally washable – stains can’t be removed from natural sisal.’
In 25-plus years running the Carpetstore, Clay and Joe have built up an impressive contacts book, dealing with 90% of manufacturers. ‘That means we can constantly refresh our ranges of contemporary and classic carpets, made-to-measure bespoke rugs and stair runners as well as top-quality vinyl, tile and laminate flooring from leading suppliers such as Invictus and Quick-Step,’ explains Clay. ‘Often we’re the only West London stockist for a product.
‘We’re able to display 100 ranges in the showroom and there are at least another 100 in the basement (all are guaranteed to be moth-free). So, if someone wants something unusual, we can usually bring up a pattern book to suit.’
Clay and Joe use their own fitters and they will take up old carpets, move large items of furniture, trim doors and prepare floors by laying plyboard and hardboard. ‘Also, we always tell the client if we think a surface needs attention,’ adds Clay.
