It’s a Tuesday lunchtime at the Carpetstore. ‘So far we’ve had a dozen or so customers come in, and at least four have asked about Unnatural Flooring’s man-made alternative to sisal range,’ says Clay Miller, who co-owns the business with his brother Joe.
‘People see the carpets in the homes of friends and family and they want it. I must admit, it does look stunning when down and the finish is just so sharp: even the Unnatural Flooring rep can’t quite believe the level of popularity that we’re seeing.
‘The carpets are made from woven vinyl, come in stylish designs and look and feel like sisal. Even better, if you spill tea, coffee or wine on natural sisal, the stain is permanent; in contrast, Unnatural’s sisal-look is washable, hard-wearing and stain-resistant. Also, it can be made up into rugs for use on patios and outside decking and is perfect for heavy-traffic restaurants, offices and communal properties.’
The Carpetstore uses its own expert fitters for every job and that’s particularly important when working with materials such as man-made sisal. ‘The process is to stick the underlay to the floor and then stick the carpet to the underlay,’ explains Clay. ‘That can be tricky as every contour is revealed: it takes experience and skill to work with those types of product.
‘In addition, our teams will take up old carpets, move large furniture, trim doors and lay plyboard and hardboard. And we always advise clients if we think a surface needs attention. Then they can make an informed decision on the best way forward.’
