West & Hunter wins the industry’s most prestigious national award
It has been a whirlwind couple of years for Zamaine Ismail. In 2021 the former Master Barber at Acqua di Parma in Selfridges opened West & Hunter, his independent family-run Gentlemen’s Grooming Club, on the High Road. Then came Covid.
Undaunted, Zamaine’s team used the lockdowns to refine their service, and that has now paid dividends. In July, West & Hunter won the coveted industry accolade of Barbershop/Grooming Salon of the year at the British Hairdressing Business awards. ‘We were up against every other UK barbershop and it’s fantastic to be considered the best, particularly since we were the “new kids on the block,”’ explains Zamaine. ‘On the evening, a black tie ceremony at the Park Plaza, we had no inkling that we had won until the envelope was opened.
‘It was a wonderful acknowledgment of the concept for the business, which was to offer a luxury personal experience in an elegant environment, and a well-deserved reward for my amazingly talented colleagues – Paul, Shadia, Khush and Emily – who have worked so hard to support me. ‘The judging criteria were: Concept, Execution, Service Levels and Cutting Methods. The assessment was done by industry experts, including past winners, and we had no idea who visited us or when. We’ve also been nominated for the Best Client Experience and, even more excitingly, we will be representing the UK in the Best Barbershop in the World awards.’
West & Hunter specialises in precision cutting, beard grooming, shaving and revitalising skin and eye facials using high quality products, including W+H’s own signature brand. ‘I’m delighted that we built such a strong local clientele, many of whom have become friends, as well as having regulars from across London,’ says Zamaine. ‘For us, it makes coming to work a pleasure.’
