‘Jia’s excellent customer service made this a great experience. Throwing the axes was really therapeutic, we will come again.’ – Nadia Bennett
In North America, the old lumberjack pastime of axe throwing has evolved into an exciting professional sport with leagues and tournaments. At the same time, it is growing in popularity as a social activity, and now West London locals can hone their axe-wielding technique without venturing into the wilds of the local park.
Game of Throwing opened on King Street over a year ago. ‘We offer all ages a fantastic fun experience that is as competitive as you want to make it,’ says Jia Lau, the charming Manager and, judging by her demonstration, no mean axe thrower herself. ‘And, of course, it’s the perfect setting for a get-together with friends and family or for hosting corporate parties and team-building events.’
There are eight axe-throwing lanes at the venue and players can choose between two types of game. The first is more traditional with five lanes featuring a UV-illuminated archery-style target and the scoring depending on where the axe lands. The second (three lanes) introduces
a high-tech arcade-style twist to the concept with automatic scoring and a range of interactive mini-games projected onto the target.
‘Of course, safety is our priority,’ explains Jia. ‘Everyone receives a full briefing, which includes how to throw an axe properly, and we supervise the games. The axes are thrown from 12ft and only down an empty, enclosed lane with flooring that is designed to reduce impact and bounces. Each session lasts an hour, up to five people can play per lane and there’s space to socialise and enjoy a drink (soft only) while waiting to take a turn.’
Game of Throwing is open seven days a week (2pm-10pm weekdays and 10am-10pm weekends) and children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. ‘All our lanes can be booked by arrangement and gift vouchers are available,’ adds Jia. ‘Come and put your aim to the test – you’ll have a fantastic, safe time!
