WholeLife Clinics: The Shock Of The New

Gayle Maffulli

Shockwave therapy is delivering consistently impressive results in treating a wide range of physical injuries and health issues

‘When applied to the body’s tissues, shockwaves initiate a natural healing response by regenerating blood vessels and nerve cells,’ explains Gayle Maffullli of Chiswick’s WholeLife Clinics (based at Dorota’s Lifestyle Studio on the High Road).

‘It’s a non-invasive and proven process. We specialise in using shockwaves to treat, among other conditions, soft tissue and musculoskeletal problems, sports injuries, erectile dysfunction and lower back pain.’ Gayle, an ex-Trauma Nurse and former lead practitioner at a Harley Street practice, and her husband, renowned orthopaedic surgeon Professor Nicola Maffulli, are among the pioneers of shockwave therapy in the UK, founding the British Shockwave Association in 2018.

Gayle trained in the UK and Germany and has been administering shockwaves since 2015. ‘First and foremost, it’s essential to have a precise diagnosis, which we make at the initial free consultation. There are two principal types of shockwave therapy: radial and focused. The former is perfect for sports injuries and chronic inflammations and the latter, which pinpoints specific areas of the body, for severe calcification and erectile dysfunction.

‘I use a handpiece with a flat area the size of a 10p piece at the end. That enables me to target pain with precision. Each season lasts 10-15 minutes and, afterwards, patients can carry on with daily life. There are no adverse effects; in fact, we encourage them to be active, walk around and use their arms because increased blood flow boosts the healing mechanism.’

WholeLife Clinics also offers aesthetic procedures using High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) technology and clinically-tested solutions to combat cellulite, excessive fat and loose skin. Gayle always takes an integrated approach. I look at the patient as a whole, treating the immediate issue and any underlying root causes. That’s the best way to prevent an issue recurring – we want everyone to get better and stay that way!’
