Sevda Uykan: Painting A Picture

Sevda Uykan

‘For me, art is about freedom,’ says Sevda Uykan. ‘As artists, it is so important that we ask questions and challenge common perceptions.’ That sense of confrontation is fundamental to her bold, vivid paintings, which reflect both a fascinating cosmopolitan background and her training as a psychotherapist.

Born into a Serbian family in Istanbul, Sevda grew up juggling two cultures, one liberal and the other conservative. ‘What was acceptable in my family was not necessarily so in society,’ she explains. ‘That made me something of a rebel when choosing subject matter. In the last few years my work has been strongly influenced by my psychotherapy studies, and in particular on how childhood experiences impact on adult life.’

Sevda has lived in Chiswick for seven years and, much to her delight, has now become a UK citizen. ‘I’m very proud to call myself a British artist!’ Her signature style uses acrylic on canvas, often with the addition of embroidery, and she also makes personal ‘Art-Boxes’ which feature portraits of loved ones on a wooden surface and make perfect “one-off” gifts.

In recent years Sevda has won a virtual competition organised by the Saatchi Gallery and exhibited at the Brick Lane Gallery’s Contemporary Art Exhibition and, by invitation, at the Boomer Gallery in a show curated by Anthony Fawcett. She has also published a book of artwork, an adult art-meets-mindfulness colouring book and three illustrated children’s books, Londi on Mars, Mila’s Rainbow and A Happy Dog London (all available on Amazon).

Sevda’s work can be viewed on her website/social media and she is happy to arrange viewings and accepts commissions for paintings and Art Boxes.
