Under its charming managers, Tom and Jola, The Black Lion is a pub transformed

Here’s an intriguing local trivia question: other than being famous actors, what connects Douglas Fairbanks Jnr, Sir Michael Redgrave and Errol Flynn? The answer is, they are all reputed to have played the traditional game of London Skittles at The Black Lion near Chiswick Mall.

The picturesque pub is one of only two in London still to have an alley and Tom and Jola, the delightfully friendly couple who manage the pub, will happily set up the space if you fancy testing your skittling skills (let them know beforehand because the alley doubles as a popular function room for parties and sit-down meals).

Tom and Jola have been at the reins for two years and they’ve worked hard to successfully revive The Black Lion after a period when its reputation had suffered. ‘We used to live in Chiswick, so it was lovely to come back,’ smiles Jola. ‘We love the sense of community and we’ve been so pleased to attract back many regulars.

‘Our aim is to provide superb fresh food, excellent beers and wines and be both a friendly community focal point and welcoming pitstop for riverside walkers (we are dog friendly). We’re particularly proud of our high quality menu: our signature dishes are delicious pies, the Sunday roasts are incredibly popular and we have excellent vegetarian and vegan options.’

With three open fires and a fire pit in the beer garden, The Black Lion makes a wonderfully warm, cosy autumn/winter location for a drink and a meal. Oh, and of course, like all historic pubs, The Black Lion has a resident ghost. You’ll have to ask Tom and Jola to tell you the full story…
