A fascinating, transformative and still largely unknown Chinese healing practice
‘We have seen so many inspiring experiences, some simply resulting in a better, more balanced quality of life and others with remarkable physical outcomes,’ explains Mayur Shah, Master Teacher of Tao Calligraphy at Power of Soul.
‘Despite taking all kinds of medication, one lady had been suffering with frequent extremely painful migraine-like headaches for 40 years. She took a Tao Calligraphy class with us and, when we spoke four months later, she reported no problems at all – and said that we had put a smile back on her face!’
Dedicated to teaching the work of Master Zhi Gang Sha, a Tao Grandmaster, Power of Soul opened on Turnham Green Terrace in 2018. According to ancient Chinese tradition, Tao is the source and guide to all reality, encompassing the principles of Yin and Yang and emphasising the sense of wellbeing created by living in harmony with the natural order.
Master Sha himself is the lineage holder of Yi Bi Zi, a “one stroke” calligraphy style. In devising Tao Calligraphy, he has built on Yi Bi Zi to create a healing tool that is taught worldwide. The practice does not involve touching the paintings: rather, the lines are traced either in person or online via Zoom with five fingertips held together. The act of tracing creates a state that combines meditation and qi (energy) and effects a positive transformation in the mind and body.
‘Most people use our teaching to achieve a happier, healthier life or reach a deeper spiritual level,’ explains Mayur. ‘We’re not medical – we are purely complementary – and we never say that we are “better” than other practices. All we ask is that people come with an open mind and heart. The only way to understand Tao Calligraphy is to experience it.’
