‘I’m a Chiswick boy through and through. In fact, my friends call me Mr Chiswick! My great grandparents bought our family home in Prebend Gardens from the builder in 1926. My grandmother moved in when she was 8 years old. My mother was born there and so was I.’
Chris joined Whitman & Co in 2002. ‘After university, I wanted to work in the property sector. So, I walked around the Chiswick agents handing out my CV. Fortunately for me, James (Matthews) and Russell (Savage) gave me a chance.’ Chris is still a local: after living in Annandale Road and Heathfield Gardens, he has now moved to Grove Park.
Since he started in lettings, Chris has seen the same clients return time and again. ‘You catch up with them at different stages of the property-buying cycle – from rentals to buying a first home and then moving into a family house. Over the last 16 years, I’ve been a part of their lives and that’s very rewarding. It also epitomises what we’re about; customers know they’ll see a familiar face and receive a friendly service.’
According to Rightmove, in the last calendar year Whitman & Co sold 106 properties compared to 36 by the closest competitor. Additionally, Chris estimates that a further 15% of business comes by selling off market. ‘It’s an area where we can really add value. We have a large database and that enables us to put together buyers and sellers more easily.
‘Most importantly, we never put clients under pressure and we believe in giving good advice. That means flagging up potential issues and, if they can’t be solved, saying that it might be better to hang fire on a purchase or sale. If you’re always honest, people will come back to you. Longevity is at the core of our business.’
